The present church is the second building, erected over an ancient roman chapel originally constructed during the 10th century. Additions were made over the centuries. The new building was founded in 1646. Work would continue for about 140 years. The 1749 south tower remained unachieved. The north tower is still under restoration in order to become one of the biggest belfry of the city.
