The Golden Temple is the most sacred shrine of Sikhism. Its fourth guru, Guru Ram Das (1574-1581 AD), excavated a tank which subsequently became known as Amritsar (Pool of the Nectar of Immortality) and gave its name to the city that grew around it. Much of the present decorative gilding and marble work date from the early 1800s.
