The Library of Alexandria is generally thought to have been founded at the beginning of the 3rd century BC, during the reign of Ptolemy II. It was famous because of the wealth of handwritten books it contained (est. 700,000 volumes) and that have been totally devastated by fire(s). The Bibliotheca Alexandrina was inaugurated in 2003 near the site of the old Library and can contain 5,000,000 volumes.
